earthToPixels turns aerial map tiles into isometric, SimCity-style pixel-art. It's a work in progress: an image model we fine-tuned on hand-made pixel cities, wrapped in a pipeline we engineered to render, stylize and stitch map tiles on its own.
What we're building is the platform around that, not a single map. Nothing in it is tied to a particular city: point it at any coordinates and it renders them, stylizes them, and stacks the result into a deep-zoom pyramid you can explore down to the pixel. Given enough compute, it could draw the entire world.
So far we've taken exactly one city all the way through — João Pessoa, in Brazil, where the team is from. It's the first trial and the only map that's 100% finished. The globe pins every map we've made, where we made it.
The inspiration is @_coenen and his work on isometric.nyc, which does the same thing for New York. earthToPixels is our run at it, built to go anywhere.
That compute is the hard part: running the models is genuinely expensive. If you want to see this keep going, we happily take support, funding — or honestly, just sharing it. Come talk to @tiagotrindadeo on Twitter.
every coffee goes straight into compute — and compute is the only thing between us and the next city.
